Behind the scent

Named for the medieval witches' "flying ointment." A poisonous hallucinogenic salve historically rubbed onto skin (often via a broomstick) that produced sensations of flight and is thought to be the real origin of the witch-on-a-broomstick myth. Wormwood, belladonna, and black hemlock nod directly to the salve's toxic ingredients.
